Series for: July 2013
Series title: Undiluted Gospel—A Study of Galatians
The big idea:
Sure, lots of people talk about Jesus, about being good and avoiding bad, and about feeling good about yourself, but sometimes the gospel message itself is simply assumed. Over time the gospel ends up vanishing altogether. What’s left then isn’t really the gospel at all, only a cheap counterfeit which one author has called “Christian Moralistic Therapeutic Deism.”
The idea behind moralistic, therapeutic deism is that we are able to earn favor with God by our own behavior. This way of thinking sounds religious, even “Christian” in its content, but distorts the true gospel and causes great spiritual damage. It transforms Jesus from being our Savior from sin into our cheerleader for self-improvement. And so it’s no wonder that lots of people today, even people who call themselves Christians, could care less.
The antidote to rouse us out of our apathy is to know the true gospel explicitly. In this series we will study key sections from Paul’s letter to the Galatians in which he vigorously, passionately, and practically lays out the explicit gospel to people who were starting to care less about Christ.
Life is short. Eternity is long. Our goal is that through this series you will be so overwhelmed by the grace of God in Christ that you will not only cherish the gospel, but become confident enough about the gospel to share it…undiluted.
June 30: No Additives!
If you add to or subtract from the gospel, you rob Christ of his sufficiency and make salvation dangerously uncertain. A “gospel” that doesn’t give people confidence in Christ isn’t the gospel at all.
Scriptures: Acts 15:4-11; Hebrews 12:15,18-24; Luke 11:37-54
Sermon Text: Galatians 1:1-10 (cf. also Galatians 4:8-20)
July 7: Our Salvation!
The same law of God that diagnoses our depravity cannot cure it. The bad news is not just that we don’t measure up to the law but that by the works of the law none of us will be justified before God.
Scriptures: Habakkuk 2:1-4; Romans 3:9-24; Acts 16:25-34; Matthew 19:16-26;
Sermon Text: Galatians 2:15-21
July 14: Our Fuel!
People have a tendency to think that the cross saves us from past sin, but after we are saved, we have to take over and clean ourselves up. Not true! The same gospel that saves us also sustains us.
Scriptures: 2 Peter 3:14-18; 2 Timothy 3:14-17; Jude 17-25; Ephesians 3:14-21; 1 Peter 2:2-3; Luke 22:19-20
Sermon Text: Galatians 3:1-14, 26-29
July 21: Our Freedom!
The gospel frees us to live for God by loving others. The shadow of good works proceeds from the light of the good news.
Scriptures: John 8:31-36; John 15:1-5; Colossians 3:9-17; Psalm 119:28-35
Sermon Text: Galatians 5:1-15
July 28: Our Boast!
We owe everything to Jesus Christ. Make the undiluted gospel the theme song of your life. In the end this is what matters most.
Scriptures: Jeremiah 9:23-24(25-26); 1 Corinthians 1:21-31; Luke 10:17-24; Psalm 71:1-6
Sermon Text: Galatians 6:11-18
